SACBO has formally opened the new departures terminal at Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY), completing an expansion project that began on 15 March 2024.

The works, delivered with an investment of 55 million EUR, form part of a wider 300 million EUR development plan.

The project has added 7,500 square metres to the first floor of the terminal. This area now houses 14 security lanes fitted with updated screening technology. The equipment allows passengers to leave liquids (up to two litres per container) and electronic devices inside their hand luggage during checks.

One of the lanes is designated for passengers with reduced mobility, families with young children and fast-track users. Entry to the security zone is controlled through nine boarding-pass readers.

On the ground floor, an additional 4,300 square metres has been incorporated into the check-in hall. The airport now has 64 self check-in stations, following the installation of 30 new units. Space allocated to the baggage handling system has also doubled. Beyond this, the extra-Schengen departures area has been extended by 840 square metres, providing two additional boarding gates.

In addition, the new facilities introduce an AI-based presence-detection system designed to monitor passenger flows in real time. The upper level of the expanded terminal also includes a new duty-free area operated by Avolta, adding to the retail and food-and-beverage offer available to travellers.
