VINCI Airports has completed significant modernisation and expansion works at Kansai International Airport (KIX) ahead of the Osaka 2025 Expo.
The upgrades include enhancements to Terminal 1, increasing its capacity to 40 million passengers annually and improving operational efficiency.

Since opening in 1994, Kansai International Airport has played a key role in connecting Osaka and the wider Kansai region with international destinations. In 2024, the airport served over 30.6 million passengers. The modernisation project, led by VINCI Airports in partnership with ORIX, aims to accommodate future growth and improve passenger services.
The renovation of Terminal 1 includes expanded retail areas, the largest walkthrough duty-free shop in Japan, and upgraded business lounges. These changes are designed to provide a more efficient and comfortable experience for travellers.
Additionally, new check-in areas featuring self-bag drop systems and advanced security screening lanes equipped with artificial intelligence have been introduced to streamline airport operations.

Osaka 2025 Expo
With an estimated 28 million visitors expected during the six-month Osaka 2025 Expo, KIX is set to play a key role as an entry point for international attendees. The airport has implemented call-to-gate technology to manage passenger flow and optimise gate allocation, contributing to smoother operations during the event.
