Finavia has announced a new works programme to renovate the existing approach lighting system at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport (TMP).
The work, which will take place in the Summer of 2026, has been valued at approximately 1.1 million EUR, and is not expected to affect passenger traffic.

Renovations will be carried out across three phases, with work set to begin mid-May and last for 3.5 months before wrapping up by the end of August 2026.
Serving as a continuation of Finavia’s investments and life cycle management, the maintenance of the airport’s critical infrastructure is currently ongoing, with the company stating that ‘costs are high due to the nature of the operating environment, EU regulations and legal requirements’.
Mari Nurminen, Manager of Tampere-Pirkkala Airport, Finavia, said:The renovation of the approach lighting system is an important part of the development and maintenance of the airport’s critical infrastructure.
With good project planning, we can carry out the work so that air traffic to Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is not interrupted.
During this Summer’s renovation project, the lighting system at the eastern end of the runway will be replaced as part of the lifecycle management and maintenance of the critical infrastructure. All lights installed in the new masts utilise LED technology, enabling a saving of almost 80% more energy than the old lights.
Old lights and cables will be recycled, and some of the masts will be reused in Finavia’s other sites for a new purpose.
Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is one of Finavia’s four so-called shared airports, and serves both military and civil aviation concurrently. In 2025, a total of just over 140,000 passengers travelled via the airport, with the total number of departing and arriving flights hitting 19,355. With its dual usage; military aviation, cargo flights and flight training operate at the airport as well as commercial scheduled and chartered flights.
