Following a series of delays and cost increases, the Luton Direct Air-Rail Transit (DART) automated people mover (APM) is now on schedule to commence service later this year.

The electrically powered system will link Luton Airport Parkway Station to the airport terminal in under four minutes. This connection will allow passengers to travel from central London to the airport in just half an hour.

This project was approved in 2017 and is managed by Luton Council’s airport company, Luton Rising.

It has been designed to encourage people to leave their cars at home in order to decrease carbon emissions and improve the passenger experience.

Throughout construction, more than 80 percent of materials were sourced from within 20 miles of Luton. In addition, the project has supported around 500 jobs.

Last month, His Majesty King Charles visited the airport to travel on the cable-drawn service from Luton Parkway Station to the terminal of London Luton Airport.

Before his departure, the king unveiled a plaque at the Luton DART Central Terminal station commemorating his visit.

Cllr Javeria Hussain, chair of Luton Rising, said:

His Majesty’s visit was such a powerful and memorable moment for the whole town, and it was an incredible privilege to have just some of the funding recipients we support in attendance.
