PHX Opens Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Service to General Public

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) has become the first airport globally to offer a driverless Waymo autonomous vehicle service.

The Waymo service is now open to the general public following it being made available to Trusted Tester participants in early November with an autonomous specialist in the vehicle.

Now, Waymo has removed the specialist from the vehicle and anyone can hail a Waymo to travel between the airport and downtown Phoenix. As with its other services in Phoenix, Waymo still has call centre and roadside assistance teams that intervene when the vehicles get stuck.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego takes the first ride to the airport in a Waymo autonomous vehicle
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said:

“Phoenix is leading the future of mobility and modernising how the world will experience travel. The exciting technology offers our customers an additional option for traveling to the airport in a clean, sustainable, and technologically advanced mode of transportation. The future has arrived in Phoenix!”

Waymo has also announced that it is more than doubling the Waymo One service area in Downtown Phoenix. This expansion will connect the airport service to the majority of the downtown area.

The rides are available 24/7 in Waymo’s fully electric Jaguar I-PACE, which is equipped with the fifth-generation Waymo Driver.

Pickups and drop-offs take place at the 44th Street PHX Sky Train Station.
