Memphis Airport to Upgrade Centralised De-Icing Facility

Memphis International Airport is upgrading its centralised de-icing facility by installing TKH’s CEDD® airfield ground lighting (AGL) technology and JCAII’s SmartPad de-icing system.

JCAII’s SmartPad is a technological infrastructure platform that digitalises de-icing facilities and provides advanced guidance messages to support de-icing operations. TKH’s CEDD® AGL is a low-voltage airfield ground lighting system that uses contactless energy and communication technology to make airfield lights smart and individually addressable.

TKH Airport Solutions will install smart taxiway and stop bar lights on the de-icing bay’s East and West aprons. These lights will be integrated with SmartPad’s electronic message boards and automated docking systems to guide aircraft into place for de-icing.

Erik Velderman, CEO of TKH Airport Solutions, said:

“The choice for CEDD® airfield lights for the visual control of the de-icing pad confirms the wide range of applications that are possible with our innovative technology. We are proud to support Memphis International Airport in maximally optimising their de-icing operations and look forward to continuing the great teamwork with JCAII.”

The integrated system enables Memphis Airport to improve the efficiency of its centralised de-icing facility. The use of SmartPad will lower the wait times for aircraft and save airlines significant overhead costs, while also reducing CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the system decreases the need for radio communications and thus mitigates the risk of miscommunication.

The centralised de-icing facility at Memphis International Airport can accommodate deicing operations for up to 12 B-777 aircraft
Jeff Campbell, President of JCAII, stated:

“From the first steps with the excellence and competence of the airport and engineering team, the collaborative approach with industry experts, the decision to digitalise their de-icing operation, and the selection of the most advanced technological infrastructure for de-icing operations available today, the entire community of the Memphis International Airport and its stakeholders are positioned for the future with the safest, most efficient and resilient winter operations in all weather conditions.”

The SmartPad and CEDD® AGL technology systems are scheduled to be operational at Memphis International Airport in the first half of 2022.
