Memphis International Airport (MEM) has announced that its modernised Concourse B will open on 15 February 2022.
The multi-year project has transformed the spine and east leg of the airport’s Concourse B, along with its airline and retail operations.
The redesign includes wider corridors, moving walkways, larger boarding areas, higher ceilings, and added natural lighting with View Smart Windows. In addition, a children’s play area, a stage for live music, new lounge areas, more charging stations, and new air-conditioned jet bridges have been added. The infrastructure has also been modified with much-needed seismic upgrades.
Michael Keeney, Chairman of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Board of Commissioners, said:This is an exciting day for MEM, Memphis, and our passengers. We are truly reinventing the Memphis travel experience, and we can’t wait to welcome our passengers on February 15.
The Concourse B project has an estimated cost of 245 million USD. Work is now being finalised on the ground level space for concessions, retail, and airline operations. Employees for these operations will conduct staff training in the coming weeks.
Once the concourse opens, 23 gates will be available to airlines, accommodating around 6 million passengers. This capacity accounts for 50 percent more traffic than MEM’s pre-pandemic levels, but long-term growth at MEM could facilitate a further modernisation phase for the concourse’s west leg. This future project would introduce a further 15 gates and increase the airport’s capacity to nearly 11 million annual passengers.
