Passengers departing from Munich Airport, Germany, can now use new baggage trolleys that have digital capabilities displaying passenger flight information.
Passengers using a baggage trolley for their carry-on luggage can enter their flight data manually on the trolley’s tablet or scan their boarding card. They will then be shown their flight information and related updates in real time. Beyond being shown their departure gate, passengers can choose facilities such as shops and restaurants and be guided through the terminal by a map with an integrated directory. Passengers using these tablets will also be sent offers based on their location. These trolleys are free for passengers to use and can be hired at Terminal 2 after security, before duty free.
These trolleys are part of a six-month pilot taking place at the terminal. Intelligent Track Systems (ITS) is conducing the test phase. ITS is also the manufacturer of the tablets. They have been fitted to existing carry-on baggage trolleys.
Jan-Henrik Andersson, Chief Commercial Officer, Munich Airport, said:Digitalisation doesn’t always have to happen in the background. These tablets help our guests find their way around the terminal while ensuring they can always keep an eye on the latest flight information. The project is another element of our premium innovation hub. By connecting the digital and the analog world, it will bring real added value for our passengers.
Morten Pankoke, CEO at ITS sees benefits for airport retailers as well as passengers:
Morten Pankoke:Our tablets can direct users to specific stores and also highlight retail activations and activities. These are often overlooked by passengers when they are in a rush or stressed. But if they can see the deals on the tablet, as well as the time they have to get to the gate using wayfinding, they are more likely to check out some store offers if they have the time.
