Václav Havel Airport Prague is set to expand and modernise the border control area for arriving passengers at Terminal 1, with five new passport control desks and four self-service gates.
Work is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of April 2027. The project is being carried out by Prague Airport in cooperation with the Police of the Czech Republic.
The expansion is intended to increase border control capacity during busy periods and reduce passenger waiting times. Prague Airport said the need for additional capacity has become more apparent since the introduction of the European Entry/Exit System (EES) in October 2025.
Five new passport control booths and four EasyGoGate (EGG) self-service gates for European passport holders will be installed as part of the project. The Police of the Czech Republic will supply and install the new equipment.
The project will also expand the passenger waiting area before border control and upgrade ventilation throughout the passport control area.
Martin Kučera, a member of Prague Airport’s Board of Directors said:By expanding border control, we are responding to the growing pressure on capacity, which has become even more evident since the European Entry/Exit System was introduced in October last year. Our goal is to speed up border control while providing a more comfortable experience for passengers as they wait. The new passport control desks and self-service gates will enable the airport to handle peak traffic more effectively and help reduce waiting times.
The overall investment will be approximately 290 million CZK (9.9 million GBP), covering construction, engineering and design services, technical supervision and health and safety coordination.
The airport and Czech police have coordinated the project to ensure the new border control facilities meet security standards and legislative requirements.
