Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) has celebrated the completion of a recent trial utilising a new hydrogen-electric pickup truck from Toyota.

The trial, which took place over the course of a week, saw the vehicle accompany Bird Control, operating from early morning until late evening each day.

With an overall ambition to achieve emission-free ground operations by 2030; RTM has already replaced a large part of its lighter vehicle with electric counterparts, but has admitted that it has been struggling with heavier deployment.

To this end, the airport has stated that it believes hydrogen to be a ‘promising solution’ whilst maintaining that it ‘still needs to prove itself further in practice’.

RTM has collaborated with Toyota to utilise the airport grounds as a test location, with both companies aiming to gain practical experience with the technology within an operational environment.
