San Antonio’s City Council has issued approval for San Antonio International Airport (SAT) to advance the development of a new Ground Load Facility (GLF) with additional gates.

Following this approval, the aviation director is now able to negotiate and execute a design-build services contract with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. to establish the new GLF in Terminal A.

This project will construct additional gates to support the growth in air travel at SAT.

Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports, San Antonio Airport System said:

We’re excited to get started on the GLF. This is a greatly needed step in our expansion. It will bring more flight options for domestic and international travel as we continue to see a high demand for that.

A GLF provides additional capacity for people to board and disembark planes directly from the tarmac, rather than using passenger boarding bridges.

Construction on enabling works for this project such as relocating a fence, the foundations, site work and utilities will begin this summer.

Work on the GLF is then expected to start in early 2024 and is scheduled to be completed in March 2025.
