Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has received the People’s Choice Award for projects over 10 million USD from the American Institute of Architects, San Francisco (AIASF).
Winners for the AIASF annual Design Awards were announced at a recent award ceremony in San Francisco on 28 April 2022.
The AIASF awards programme acknowledges outstanding achievements in architecture and design within the Bay Area. The inclusion of the People’s Choice Award provides the public with an opportunity to recognise excellent architectural work in the community.
SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero said:Harvey Milk Terminal 1 set a new benchmark for the airport experience at SFO. This facility embodies the very best values of our region and celebrates the legacy of pioneering civil rights leader Harvey Milk. We are truly honoured to receive the People’s Choice Award from the American Institute of Architects, San Francisco. My thanks go out to the entire project team for this achievement.
SFO’s 2.4 billion USD Harvey Milk Terminal 1 project consists of four phases. The first phase included 9 departure gates, which opened in July 2019. In the second phase, an additional nine gates, an exterior façade, and a new ticket counter area were opened in April 2020. The third phase was completed in May 2021, adding the final seven departure gates, a new post-security connector to the International Terminal, and a museum gallery. The fourth phase will construct a new North check-in lobby and is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
In addition to this latest recognition from the American Institute of Architects, SFO Harvey Milk Terminal 1 has already received several notable certifications. In February 2022, Harvey Milk Terminal 1 became the first airport terminal in the world to earn Platinum certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme’s latest standards. Furthermore, in March 2021, it became the first terminal in the world to achieve Fitwel certification, which provides guidelines on how to design and operate healthier buildings.
