Southampton Airport (SOU) has officially opened its runway extension at an event attended by the UK’s Aviation Minister, Baroness Vere.

This 17 million GBP project commenced on 3 April to construct a 164-metre extension to the northern end of the airport’s runway.

The extended runway will now allow larger aircraft to operate to and from Southampton. In turn, it is anticipated that this will help the airport attract more airlines and offer new routes.

In addition to the ribbon cutting, guests attending the opening ceremony were able to watch a World War II Spitfire takeoff from the runway extension.

Southampton Airport's Operations Director, Steve Szalay said:

We would like to thank everyone who has supported Southampton Airport’s runway extension over the last few years, from members of the public to the local business community. The extension is a critical part of our future and will help enhance the region’s connectivity, safeguard the airport’s future and help deliver social and economic benefits to Eastleigh, Southampton and the wider region.
