American Airlines has announced plans to introduce electronic boarding gates at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), with deployment scheduled to begin this summer.
The move follows a pilot programme conducted in November 2025, from which the airline received positive feedback from passengers and staff.

The technology will be installed at scale at DFW, American’s largest hub, beginning with the new Terminal C pier expansion. The airline stated that it will be the first major U.S. network carrier to roll out dormakaba electronic boarding gates across a primary hub.
Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, said:Boarding plays a key role in how customers experience the final moments before their flight, and electronic boarding gates will further elevate that experience, creating a more seamless and consistent process. This innovative change is part of a broader shift toward creating a more intuitive travel journey, one that blends technology and service to guide customers through each step with greater ease and confidence, delivering a modern, consistent experience wherever they travel with us.
The electronic gates are designed to support both passengers and airline staff during boarding. Features include automated validation of boarding passes, touchscreen instructions, and controlled passenger flow onto the aircraft. The system is expected to reduce manual tasks for staff, allowing them to focus on operational duties and customer assistance.
The gates will be installed in conjunction with wider development works at DFW, including expansions to Terminals A and C. These projects form part of a multi-year modernisation programme aimed at improving passenger movement through the airport.
American’s Senior Vice President of DFW Hub Operations Jim Moses said:After piloting the technology late last year and seeing positive feedback from both customers and team members, we’re excited to further incorporate electronic boarding gates at DFW. This is another step forward in creating a modern, seamless journey for customers, while keeping our people at the center of the experience.
The introduction of electronic boarding gates is one element of American Airlines’ broader strategy to update the travel experience. The airline has recently introduced additional measures, including revised identity verification processes for international connections and participation in the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID programme.
Further changes planned for this year include complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members, supported by AT&T, as well as updates to the airline’s mobile application and disruption management systems.
Following the initial rollout at DFW, American Airlines intends to extend the use of electronic boarding gates to other hubs and gateway airports over time, with the aim of creating a more standardised boarding process across its network.
