David P. Cummins has been confirmed as the eighth Administrator of the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Cummins was confirmed by the US Senate on 7 August and has since been sworn into the role.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) welcomed the appointment, highlighting the TSA’s role in securing rail and public transport networks alongside aviation.

APTA issued the following statement:

APTA congratulates David Cummins on his confirmation and swearing-in as Administrator of the TSA. TSA’s mission extends well beyond aviation to the security of our nation’s rail systems, public transit, and other surface transportation networks that millions of Americans rely on every day. We look forward to working with Administrator Cummins and his team on public transportation security priorities, including infrastructure protection, workforce training, and preparedness for major national events in the years ahead.

TSA Priorities

The TSA noted that Cummins’ priorities will include strengthening its workforce and improving employee morale.

The agency also plans to introduce new technology at airport security checkpoints and provide passengers with information intended to reduce waiting times and help travellers move through security more quickly.

Another focus will be protecting transportation networks from emerging threats, including drones and cyberattacks.

Cummins’ appointment comes as transportation agencies continue to address security risks across interconnected aviation and surface transport networks.

The TSA said its work under the new administrator will focus on supporting its workforce, improving the passenger screening process and strengthening the resilience of transportation infrastructure.
