Kansai Airports has unveiled a brand new international departure area at Terminal 1 of Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Japan.

Part of the terminal’s renovation, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was recently held with various stakeholders of KIX, including Representative Director and CEO of Kansai Airports, Yoshiyuki Yamaya, and Representative Director and Co-CEO, Benoit Rulleau.

The new area forms part of a larger project to renovate the entirety of KIX’s Terminal 1

The new area allows passengers a streamlined experience through the passport control process with the introduction of a centralised immigration area, which has been relocated from its previous positions split across the North and South ends of the terminal.

Works also include four new ‘Mood Areas’, which offer travellers distinct retail experiences based on their current mood.

The Kansai Airports group will continue to collaborate closely with stakeholders to strengthen KIX’s capabilities for both domestic and international passengers, continuing with renovation, safety and security as top priorities.

The new international departure area is set to be opened to the public on Sunday 5 December 2023, with plans for the rest of KIX’s overhaul set to be complete by spring 2025. Future expansions are also planned for the international commercial area of the airport.

In our latest Airport Industry-News magazine, the new international departure area at KIX was included as a stand-out project for 2023.
