Prior to the new terminal opening at Kansas International Airport in March 2023, Kansas City Aviation Department has unveiled updated branding to help unify operations across both airports in Kansas City.

Kansas City Aviation Department owns and operates Kansas City International Airport and Kansas City Wheeler Downtown Airport. The revised shared logo, brand fonts and colours reflect the organisation’s plans for a collaborative and positive future for both facilities.

This rebrand comes at an important time in the department’s history, as its 39-gate, 1.5 billion USD new terminal is set to open at Kansas City International Airport in March 2023. Meanwhile, continued updates and upgrades are also planned for Downtown Airport.

Pat Klein, Aviation Department director said:

Today is an exciting day in Kansas City’s rich aviation history. Our revised branding and visual identity not only represents our organisation today, but sets the stage for where we are heading – onward and upward.

The rebrand include a revised logo with a design inspired by an airplane’s wings.

Kansas Airports Branding
The shape of the logo symbolises the movement and travel the organisation sees every day

The logo’s three triangles represent the three entities of the brand: Kansas City Aviation Department, Kansas City International Airport and Kansas City Wheeler Downtown Airport.

The negative space between the triangles depicts sun rays and mirrors the design of the new terminal’s cantilevered roofline.

The organisation’s brand colours have also been updated to represent a traveller’s journey from the green ground to the blue sky.

In addition, Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport is being rebranded as Kansas City Wheeler Downtown Airport to better connect the airport name to the city it serves.
