London Luton Airport (LTN) has selected Leidos as the principle contractor to upgrade technology across multiple security checkpoints.

Under the agreement, Leidos will install 12 of its integrated ClearScan cabin baggage security scanners and ProPassage automated tray return systems at Luton Airport.

ClearScan is a computed tomography (CT) scanner that uses advanced explosive detection algorithms to provide a 3D image of the contents of a passenger’s bags.

This deployment will thus eliminate the need to remove electronics and liquids from hand luggage in line with the UK government’s 2024 legislation change.

Meanwhile, the large, automated ProPassage trays will reduce the number of trays needed per passenger, while also helping to prevent light items being lost from shallow trays.

These technologies will enable Luton Airport to process passengers through its security checkpoints more quickly and efficiently.

To further improve operations, Leidos will also install its Mosaic open-architecture software platform, which will integrate all security components into a single management system.

Brad Buswell, Senior Vice President and Operations Manager at Leidos said:

This is an exciting opportunity for our team, and we look forward to supporting these important initiatives at London Luton Airport. By focusing on end-to-end solutions versus individual systems, we will deliver a holistic security management solution, which can scale with the airport’s future needs.

As the principal contractor for this project, Leidos will manage all relevant subcontractors and associated consultants. This work will include overseeing building modifications to create two central image-processing rooms.

Work on the project has begun, with the first upgraded lanes expected to open to the public in the fourth quarter of 2023.
