Miami-Dade County has announced plans for the first airport-wide digital monitoring hub in the United States, with a new operations centre planned for Miami International Airport by 2027.

The planned Airport Operations Center (AOC) and Digital Monitoring Hub will serve as a centralised operations and emergency response hub for the airport.

The 33 million USD project will cover 13,254 square feet and include AI-powered long-range pan-tilt-zoom cameras, digital tower technology and a high-definition panoramic video wall designed to provide 360-degree monitoring across airside, landside and terminal areas.

The system is intended to improve operational oversight, security coordination and incident response across the airport site. The centre will also include infrastructure designed for emergency situations, including hurricane-resistant towers, vibration-controlled platforms and cyber-secure systems.

The facility will accommodate representatives from around 30 agencies, allowing the operations centre to transition into an emergency management hub during major incidents or severe weather events.

Mayor Levine Cava said:

In addition to ranking among the busiest airports in the world, MIA is also a proven industry leader in multi-agency collaboration, integrated airport operations, and incident management. As MIA continues to modernise every step of the passenger journey from the cabin to the curb, its world-class safety and security posture will take another giant leap forward with this cutting-edge operations centre. This state-of-the-art facility is just the latest example of how MIA is becoming more customer-friendly, modern, and future-ready than ever before, to better protect and serve our travellers and employees.

The future AOC forms part of the airport’s wider 14 billion USD Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) programme, which includes more than 200 infrastructure and customer service projects planned over the next five years.

Recent and planned developments under the programme include the opening of the Ibis Garage in December 2025, upgrades to more than 600 elevators, escalators and moving walkways, and the renovation of 196 public-access restrooms across the airport’s terminals and concourses.

Additional expansion projects include the planned Concourse K extension, scheduled to open in 2029, and the Gate D60 expansion project, which is expected to be completed in 2030.
