Munich Airport has officially opened its new pier in the Terminal 1 building, with around 1,000 guests invited to take part in a celebration onsite.

Guests included the Minister-President of Bavaria Dr. Markus Söder; Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder; Bavarian Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Munich Airport Albert Füracker; Head of the Department of Labor and Economic Affairs of the City of Munich Dr. Christian Scharpf, and Chief Executive Officer of Munich Airport Jost Lammers.

Munich Airport new pier
The new pier has been funded entirely through private investment

At 95,000 square metres; the new Terminal 1 Pier will allow Munich Airport to handle up to six million additional passengers per year, and features modern check-in areas, centralised security checkpoints, large waiting areas and new retail and dining options.

Of its six levels, three are dedicated to passenger operations, and include rest and quiet zones, as well as prayer rooms.

The pier is equipped to handle up to twelve short- and medium-haul aircraft, or six wide-body jets at any one time, and is home to approximately 40 international airlines.

During the opening event, speakers unveiled the pier’s previously concealed marketplace, as well as two new, exclusive lounges: the 1,200 square-metre, two-story Airport Lounge World, and the Emirates Lounge, which is available for use by eligible Emirates customers.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport said:

The new pier represents the future of our airport: more capacity, more comfort, more international connections.

As a modern gateway to the world, it strengthens our role as a leading European aviation hub.

Funded entirely through independent investment; the new pier also introduces a revamped dining concept, which aims to focus on high-quality products, modern design and a comfortable atmosphere. The area features five new restaurants that look to combine regional specialties with international trends whilst also offering halal, vegetarian and vegan options.
