Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) has completed the design phase of its Taxiway S reconstruction project.
The project will remove existing asphalt, replace the base material and repair the surface between intersections with Taxiway N and Taxiway U. This work will provide suitable pavement for aircraft movements through to the end of 2040.
Additional design components also include upgrades to the airfield’s LED lighting, signage and drainage systems.
Airport Assistant Engineering Manager Lee Sutanto said:The reconstruction of Taxiway S will be a part of PHL’s aggressive multi-year effort to rehabilitate its ageing pavement infrastructure. Taxiway S currently serves as a feeder to our busiest runway, 9R-27L. Taxiway S has deteriorated due to wear and tear associated with heavy use and increasing age. This project will focus on addressing pavement deficiencies at Taxiway S as well as the construction of two new connecting Taxiways T and P6, which aims to improve overall operational efficiency.
This project is supported by 23,621,380 USD in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Construction work is set to begin in the spring of 2024 and will span for approximately two years. The construction contract for this undertaking has been awarded to James J. Anderson Construction Company, Inc.
