Schiphol Airport has announced the introduction of the world’s first electric TaxiBot.

Introduced in collaboration with easyJet, Airbus and Menzies; the TaxiBot will transport Airbus A320 planes from the gate to the Polderbaan Runway when it is in use.

The pure-electric variant will join the two existing hybrid TaxiBots that have been transporting KLM Boeing 737s to the Polderbaan since 2022.

Schiphol has chosen to deploy the TaxiBot on this runway due to its longer taxi time, with the introduction of the unit expected to result in fuel savings of up to 65%.

Powered by Smart Airport Systems; the TaxiBot is a special tug that can move aircraft from the gate to the runway at speeds of up to 23 knots (42 km/h).

The pilot controls the unit from the cockpit, and only starts aircraft engines just prior to departure on the runway – with an employee posted inside the TaxiBot responsible for driving it back to the gate for the next flight following uncoupling.

Esmé Valk, Chief People & Transformation bij Royal Schiphol Group, said:

By deploying the TaxiBot, we’re taking another practical step towards reduced emissions and noise on the apron. This is how we’re creating a healthier and cleaner workplace, and an ever more sustainable and modern airport that is ready for the future.

Whilst Schiphol currently possesses the world’s only electric unit; an additional three TaxiBots are scheduled to arrive by the end of 2026, allowing deployment to be expanded to more aircraft types.

Schiphol is currently working on certification for Embraer aircraft with KLM Cityhopper and other parties.
