Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) has revealed design renderings for its C Concourse expansion project, which will add four additional floors above the existing building to enhance the airport’s facilities and sustainability efforts.

SEA’s new C Concourse will include an additional 145,530 square feet of dining and retail space, as well as an interfaith prayer and meditation room, a nursing suite, and a new Alaska Airlines lounge. The expansion also encompasses office space for airport businesses, airlines, and the TSA.

The Grand Stairs at C will feature in the heart of the space, providing passengers with a place to enjoy airfield views, music, and art.

SEA Managing Director Lance Lyttle said:

We have a clear vision for how the airport will look and feel in the coming years. Making your experience less stressful and more predictable is at the center of our vision. You can feel the difference now at the newly modernized N Concourse and soon to open International Arrivals Facility. The C Concourse Expansion is what’s next in how SEA serves travelers, and we can’t wait.

Miller Hull and Woods Bagot are leading the expansion project’s design concept of “bringing in and seeing out” so that passengers can benefit from the natural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest alongside the City of Seattle’s energy.

The Grand Stairs provide passengers with a central gathering space that reflects regional public and farmers markets, while the light solariums and Douglas fir coffers are inspired by the Pacific Northwest forests.

Furthermore, SEA’s C Concourse expansion will provide passengers with unobstructed views of the airfield and Olympic Mountains via an impressive glass lookout deck.

Brian Court, Miller Hull Partner, said:

The concourse C expansion will bring much needed light, air and passenger amenities to one of the busiest crossroads in the terminal. The new building was designed to bring back the excitement of flight with soaring interior volumes of space and multiple outdoor observation decks that reconnect us to the magic of travel and the iconic mountain and sound views that define the Pacific Northwest.

The C Concourse expansion is the first project of its kind to follow the Port of Seattle’s Sustainable Project Framework, a process to transparently evaluate alternative, sustainable approaches to build capital projects.

The sustainable features of this project will therefore set the precedent for future capital projects.

Early work on the project is set to commence this summer, with major construction beginning in 2023. The expanded facility is expected to be operational in 2027.

The budget range for the C Concourse Expansion is 240 million to 500 million USD. The Port of Seattle Commission has currently approved 340 million USD for the project, which can be amended as it progresses.
