Fraport has begun testing Rohde & Schwarz’s first walk-through security scanner in Terminal 1 at Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

The R&S QPS Walk2000 aims to speed up security checks, as passengers can simply walk through the scanner at a normal pace without stopping.

Furthermore, as the millimetre-wave technology can penetrate multiple layers of clothing, passengers do not have to remove jackets and coats.

This new 360° scanner can detect metallic and non-metallic prohibited items quickly and without contact using AI-based software.

Any anomalies detected on a passenger are then accurately displayed on an avatar in real-time, allowing security staff to focus any follow-up checks on the relevant areas.

The test and evaluation phase of this technology will take place at Frankfurt Airport over a period of six months to provide Fraport and Rohde & Schwarz with data and information on how to further optimise the system.

During this phase, the R&S QPS Walk2000 technology will be directly compared with the existing R&S QPS201 scanners at the airport. This will ensure that walk-through security checks for passengers can be equally as reliable as those that require the passenger to remain stationary.
