Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal 1 has been recognised by the Prix Versailles as one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Airports,” thanks to its architectural design, passenger experience and integration of Indian cultural influences.
The terminal, which opened in 2025, was selected for combining large-scale infrastructure with a design inspired by one of India’s most recognisable cultural symbols while incorporating digital technologies throughout the passenger journey.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the terminal is centred around the form of the lotus flower, which provides the inspiration for the building’s overall architectural language. The roof structure and sweeping overhangs are intended to resemble the unfolding petals of the lotus, creating a distinctive identity for the airport.
The arrival sequence has also been shaped around this concept. A series of geometric portals leads passengers into the terminal before transitioning into a continuous ceiling supported by lotus-inspired columns, creating intuitive routes through the building while defining the main entrance spaces.
According to the Prix Versailles, the architecture balances its sculptural appearance with the operational requirements of a modern international airport, combining passenger circulation with functional design.
The project was delivered on a site that required significant engineering works before construction, including the diversion of rivers, relocation of high-voltage power lines and the reclamation of marshland.
A digital art programme has also been integrated throughout the terminal, with interactive installations located at key passenger waiting areas. These displays combine contemporary technology with references to India’s cultural heritage, contributing to the terminal’s passenger experience while reflecting the country’s growing focus on innovation.
Other airports included on the 2026 Prix Versailles list are Terminal 2 at Guwahati International Airport in India, Terminal 3 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in China, Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport in Germany, Pittsburgh International Airport in the US, Techo International Airport in Cambodia and Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport in the US.
