San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Ground Load Facility, which will add three new gates at the airport.
This project is supported by a 20 million USD grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The construction of a new Ground Load Facility forms a key part of SAT’s Terminal Development Program.
The addition of three new gates will add capacity and pave the way for new routes by both existing and new airlines.
Once complete, the number of gates at SAT will be increased to 30.
Jesus H. Saenz, Jr., Director of Airports, San Antonio Airport System said:The Air Service Team is continuously working with partners to bring more national and international flights to the Alamo City. This new facility allows us to accommodate both domestic and international flights – and gives our travellers even more affordable options.
The airport’s Ground Load Facility was designed by Page and will be built by a Hensel Phelps/Page design-build team.
It will located south of Terminal A, consisting of a pre-engineered metal building structure with modern passenger facilities spanning approximately 37,000 square feet of interior space.
In addition to three new gates, the ADA-accessible facility will feature bilingual signage; an integrated Federal Inspection Station for international arrivals; two levels of passenger seating; dedicated charging stations and workstations; a lactation room and family rooms; additional food and retail options; and art exhibitions from local and regional creators.
Construction on the new facility is expected to be completed in March 2025.
