American Airlines has issued a statement confirming it is not engaged in, nor interested in, any discussions regarding a potential merger with United Airlines, addressing recent speculation about consolidation in the US aviation sector.
In a statement released from its headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, the airline said it remains focused on its existing strategy and long-term positioning rather than pursuing a combination with its competitor. The company indicated that such a merger would raise concerns about competition and consumer impact.

American Airlines noted that a merger with United would be inconsistent with established antitrust principles and the broader regulatory approach to maintaining competition within the airline industry.
While acknowledging that changes in the wider airline market may occur, American Airlines made clear that it does not see a merger with United as an appropriate course of action. Instead, it stated that its priority remains the execution of its strategic objectives.
The announcement provides clarification following market discussion about possible consolidation among major US carriers, signalling that no such talks are currently taking place between the two airlines.
American Airlines stated:We appreciate the leadership and strong support of President Trump, Secretary Duffy and numerous other leaders in the Administration who have demonstrated expertise and an ongoing commitment to continue to improve the world’s best aviation industry.
American Airlines is not engaged with or interested in any discussions regarding a merger with United Airlines. While changes in the broader airline marketplace may be necessary, a combination with United would be negative for competition and for consumers, and therefore inconsistent with our understanding of the Administration’s philosophy toward the industry and principles of antitrust law. Our focus will remain on executing on our strategic objectives and positioning American to win for the long term.
We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the Administration as it takes steps to strengthen the broader airline industry.
