The City and County of San Francisco and the Port of Oakland have reached a formal agreement to resolve a trademark dispute over the naming of Oakland’s primary airport.

Under the settlement, the airport will retain the name “Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport,” preserving Oakland’s geographic identity while allowing limited reference to the broader San Francisco Bay Area.

The conflict dates back to 2024, when the Port of Oakland announced plans to rename its facility “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.” San Francisco officials filed a trademark lawsuit, arguing that the proposed branding could confuse travellers and infringe on the established identity of San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

A federal judge later issued a preliminary injunction blocking the original name change, finding that the branding risked misleading passengers, particularly international travellers, into believing the Oakland airport was affiliated with San Francisco’s primary airport.

The newly agreed name reflects a negotiated balance between the two cities’ competing concerns. According to settlement details:

  • The airport must prioritise “Oakland: at the beginning of its name
  • The phrase “San Francisco” can only appear as part of “San Francisco Bay”
  • The term “International” has been removed from the official name
  • Marketing restrictions limit how prominently “San Francisco” can be displayed

Both parties confirmed that no financial compensation was exchanged and that neither side admitted wrongdoing.

The dispute underscored broader tensions over regional branding and competition among airports serving the same metropolitan area. Oakland’s airport, located roughly 12 miles east of San Francisco, has sought to increase passenger traffic and visibility in recent years amid shifting airline routes and post-pandemic recovery challenges.

With the settlement finalised, both cities have agreed to drop their legal claims, allowing the airport to move forward under its revised name. The agreement is expected to reduce confusion for travellers while enabling Oakland to continue marketing itself as a gateway to the San Francisco Bay Area.
